Keywords are the buzzwords on everyone’s lips these days when they talk about SEO. Everyone is so convinced of the superiority of keywords that they slavishly obsess over them. The truth is that search engines are slowly evolving to accommodate other SEO methods so keywords are no longer the be all and end all of SEO efforts. However, keywords are a great way to boost your results page ranking and to be seen.
Yes, linking and online marketing methods gets you seen too. But it is keywords that help searchers zoom in on your website, your services and your products on offer. So keywords have shifted from priority to just another SEO tactic, but they still carry reasonable weight. Without them your searchers will never find you.
Different strokes for different kinds of folks
Keywords are user specific. That means that even though two words or key phrases mean the same thing not all users are going to use just the one or only the other. The people making up the cyber public are all different. Not a single one of them are the same and each will search differently for the very same thing. So, where does that leave you in the debate for keywords and the search for ideal page ranking?
It leaves you with the question of which ones to use. Defining your target market to a tee is essential for your SEO efforts. Without a clear cookie-cutter outline of what, who, where and why your market is you have no chance. Different age groups will use different words even though they mean the same thing. Different levels of education, income and lifestyle affect the words people search with. People from different geographical areas are going to search differently. It is all about geographic and demographics.
Can you target more than one group on the same page?
The answer to that is a resounding no, not if you want to get anywhere. Yes, you can stuff your page full of different keywords that all point to the same thing. For instance you can stuff your page full of a mixture of “search engine optimization” and “SEO”. That, however, is not a good idea.
Search engines pick up patterns in your letters and as such patterns in your words. Putting too many different patterns into one page will end up cancelling the effect out. Your keywords will not stand out and your search results ranking will not improve.
So what to do
What you need to do is to pick a few of the absolute best matches for your industry, company or products. You need to focus a separate landing page for each selected keyword or key phrase. This way each pattern will be picked up separately and you can target a wider market that transgresses age, race, location, gender and culture. SEO is expensive and it is better to spend your money, resources and efforts on something that actually works. Spending time, effort and money on something that does not work is nothing more than a waste. In the tough economic times that we all face it is very unwise to waste anything.
