Search engine optimization is such a buzzword in cyberspace and such a necessity for success that many a website owner can be forgiven for plunging in at the deep end. However, one should never undertake any action without thoroughly preparing for it first. And so it is with SEO too. It is important to prepare for it properly through research. Knowledge holds the key to optimization success. Before you can undertake any sort of optimization for your website there are a few crucial questions to put forward and get answers to.

First things first

The very first question you need to ask yourself is whether you are able to and capable of doing your own search engine optimization effectively and successfully. This is a question that comes up quite often these days considering the country is in a recession. Business is slow and you would be saving lots of money by doing it yourself, right? Unfortunately, that would be wrong.

In order to navigate your own optimization successfully, you need a background in both web design and SEO. In many cases, it is better to leave the job of optimization to professional companies. Their effort will be quality and consistent so that your website benefits wholly from it. Going it alone, although tempting, may lead to inconsistent optimization efforts that simply are not up to scratch with those of your competitor. If you want to rank well it is all about the right kind of consistent hard work.

Keywords are still king

There is a saying that content is king; however keywords are even more so. Your keywords are the means you offer your visitors to find you. If you provide poor directions through the bad use of keywords you will end up with very little convertible web traffic to your website. Do thorough research into the matter of keywords that are being used to source what you offer.

Scour the websites of successful competitors and see what they are doing right and take your lead from them, assess what they are doing wrong and better your website accordingly. It is also a good idea to look for less common or typical keywords to utilize for your website. Unless you are a mega corporation or a retail giant that dominates searches, you need keywords that will get you noticed. The larger companies will be opting for the more commonly used keywords and you don’t want to be competing directly with them for rank.

Specialise in a target group to start with

When you are starting out you may be tempted to use one of the well-liked and short keywords in order to tap into the general mainstream market. This is a bad idea. Long tail keywords should be a very attractive option for you. These keywords may not generate as much interest as the general ones. However, what they offer you is access to a highly specialised market that is more likely to convert into sales than the general searcher.
