There is a debate going on about whether it is really needful to do in-depth research into keywords and whether it still is necessary to do so. The rationale behind the debate is that it should work just as well to write excellent copy on the topic.

It is felt that this should automatically include target keywords on the topic. Indeed, natural writing style will produce content of good value, but many opportunities for gaining traffic will be lost.  Opportunities for related content from potential keywords will also be lost.

Keyword opportunities

Even when you are an expert on a topic, all the keywords relating to your topic will not be automatically included in the content. There are many synonyms for the terminology used commonly in your topic. You have a specific writing style and use specific words that you prefer. When people search for your topic, they will use the words and phrases they are most comfortable with. Add to this that your site visitors will be across the spectrum in language abilities, culture and geographic locations.

Another aspect is the way in which people do searches. Some use a single word, others use a phrase and another group will ask questions or use whole sentences to search. It is not possible to include all the possible search terms or accommodate all the different ways of searching without targeted keywords. The only way to ascertain which keywords are the most popular for your topic is through research. How  else will you know what keywords are being used most during searches. To be successful in attracting visitors to your website you have to appeal to the widest possible percentage within your target audience. Without keyword research it becomes simply impossible.

Topic related content opportunities

Your target market will not only search for your topic with a tight focus. Related products, services and information that surround your topic will also be searched for. Some searchers will only look for information while others specifically want descriptive images. Others will be more interested in specific sub-topics within your niche.

They might be looking for a specific product or doing comparative shopping. Even if you are a veteran and expert on your topic, there will always be keywords missed out on as language trends change.

Topics also expand and new elements come into the picture, thereby creating brand new keywords. Not doing keyword research leaves huge gaps that could be used to boost your business. the only way to cover new and alternative developments is to keep up to date with keywords and their popularity in search.

Opportunities lost

The bottom line is that keywords are vitally important for all websites and blogs. It is not about the keyword density, it is about the actual best possible keywords. People search by keywords and no business can afford to let valuable opportunities get lost for attracting targeted web traffic.

For a website to be successful, it cannot rely on those few keywords that occur naturally in its content. You need to know what each important keyword is and you have to use them. This is the only way to target people no matter what methods they use to search.
