Even if you’re a giant corporation, links aren’t going to come to you. A big part of your search engine optimisation campaign is figuring out ways to go out and get them. One way you can attract links to your site is by simply being popular.

The word ’simple’ here is deceptive. If becoming popular was a simple task, you wouldn’t need ways to go out and get links for your site. There are things you can do, however, that will give your site’s popularity a little boost. One of these ways is from an old and tried tradition of internet marketing. You don’t have to go out there to get links. Make people come to you by holding a competition.

Internet marketing generally uses the competition tactic to boost numbers of traffic on your website for a short period of time. This is not the sort of thing that will be of benefit to SEO. Your competition needs to be the kind that attracts links, not traffic. The kind of competition you want, then, is one that attracts content, not visitors.

Hold a blog competition

Bloggers frequently hold competitions and carnivals as a way of generating interest for a large number of blogs at a time. The competitors naturally want to direct attention to their entry, and post a link to the hosting site from their blog. By acting as host of one of these competitions, your site attracts the most links. You also get direct traffic from the blogs that have entered, meaning that your business gets a broader exposure.

Hosting a blog competition isn’t that difficult if you’re a part of the blogosphere. Niches frequently hold carnivals and are often looking for a host site. If you haven’t got a blog on your pages, it’s still possible to hold a blog competition. Many sites put themselves forward as host of a blogging competition without their own blog. All you need to do is post the details of the competition, and note that finalist entries will be promoted on your site.

The trickiest thing about this approach is getting yourself into a position to hold this kind of competition. Bloggers will show a certain enthusiasm for a competition of any sort, but you’re more likely to attract quality bloggers if you have some form of authority in your industry. Attracting links from quality blogs is the object of the game.

Review the ‘best of’ in your industry

It’s possible to gain a broader range of links by drawing up a ‘best of’ list in your industry. This is a subtler kind of competition which can have just as beneficial results. Tell those in the running that you plan to feature them, and they are likely to link to you to bask in the prestige.

A little give and take is necessary when trying to get links through a competition. By necessity, you will need to give links to competitors to get them. There are security concerns in doing this, and you should discuss your plans with your SEO consultant. Talk to us at SEO Consult Australia.
