Links play a highly significant part in search engine optimisation. By developing high quality links from relevant and authority websites to your own, you can increase the amount of targeted traffic that visits your website and improve the ranking of your site in the search results of the search engines. It is commonly known that it is the quality of the links that you have to your site that are important rather than merely the number of links you have. Having thousands of low quality and irrelevant links is not as beneficial for your business as a much smaller number of high quality links.

Free links from other websites can be a great way of establishing genuine links over a period of time. While this method can require a lot of time and effort, it can be highly rewarding with the search engines more likely to view these links favourably. However, there are some free links that are not actually that advantageous for a business and so you may wish to consider whether these kinds of links should be part of your SEO campaign.

At one time, reciprocal links were popular because this type of link could benefit two businesses at once so there were advantages for both websites to link to each other. If the two websites were relevant to each other and established a link, this could be beneficial for their rankings. However, with the development of link building farms where this type of link became popular, search engines began to look at this type of link as less important and as less of a valuable signifier of relevance and quality. It may be that you spend a considerable amount of time establishing reciprocal links and that these links may not improve rankings or traffic at all.

Links that do not contain relevant anchor text can also be viewed as links that are not worth much time or effort. The anchor text is highly important when trying to inform the search engines about what the website the link is for is about. Ensuring keywords and relevant terms are included in your anchor text can help the search engines to identify your link as relevant.

Often blogs and forums now have ‘no follow’ links on their websites which means that the search engines are instructed not to follow links placed within the website. If the search engine spiders don’t follow the links in websites like this then this kind of link is not going to help improve your rankings. These links may however increase the amount of traffic that visits your website so could still be beneficial.

Link building is something that should be carried out thoughtfully and carefully because different links can have a different affect and influence on your website.

We at SEO Consult can help you to develop highly productive and efficient links to your business. We can help you to establish high quality links that will help to improve the ranking of your website in the search results and increase the volume of targeted traffic that visits your website.
