There’s no textbook when it comes to link building. No-one can tell you, step by step, what to do. This makes it incredibly hard for the site owner who is new to SEO. Links are such a vital part of search engine optimization. You really can’t get by without them, but what do you do when you don’t know how to get them?
Getting a good SEO company on board is a good step, and you can talk to us about this at SEO Consult Australia. It also helps to have your own checklist when chasing links for your search engine optimization plan.
Who: Who do you want links from? You can’t ask the world for links. It helps to have a list of potential linkers, so that you know who to approach. It’s also a good idea to draw up a list of user groups you want to attract links from.
What: What is going to entice people to link to you? You need to plan out what each of your target links needs and build up some content that answers that call. For example, you might desperately want a link from an online magazine. You read through their pages and notice that they’re desperate for personal success stories. In answer, you draw up a press release exploring your own path to success in your business. Another link you want might be from an industry blog. You notice that they often feature competitions for their readers, so you forward a gift voucher for them to use as a prize. Each link has its own lever.
Where: Where do you go for links? The answer to this might be social media, forums, blogs and the media. Get the specific sites and addresses to approach.
When: When is a good time to approach people for links? If you’re trying to get links from a social media campaign, the ‘when’ might be a time of day. If you’re contacting other businesses for links, there might be a day of the week when they’ll be more open. Most offices are busy on Mondays, for example. There might even be a seasonality to consider, for example the end of a financial year.
How: How will people know that you want them to link to you? One major oversight that is made in all of the advice about attracting links is the fact that people won’t know that you want them to link to you. Some other site owners might guess that you’re looking for links if they too are involved in SEO, but you can’t rely on people to guess. Studies have shown that people react better to a prompt. Even something as simple as ‘link to me’ on a piece of content can have a big effect.
Why: You know why you want links, but why would others link to you? This is perhaps the most important thing to consider. You can know what will lever a link, but a linker needs a good solid reason to go through with it. Find that reason.
