Every webmaster knows that links and more links are of the utmost importance. People will often go to quite extraordinary lengths to get other webmasters to link to their web pages. Browse the internet and you will see questions asked on blogs and forums of ways to get those necessary ‘deep links’ that contain anchor text that are rich. In reality, people have often gone to lengths are not very ethical to obtain those coveted links.
People become blinded as they obsess about those links they want and need. And as it will, their judgement and focus become clouded. They totally forget about the critical importance of the internal links within their own websites. Yes, those very internal links that make or break a website’s navigation. You cannot control outside links, there is no way to force people to link to your website. But, you have total control over your internal links and the anchor text for those links.
Too many opinionated people out there
The internet has its good and bad points. One of the worse points is that everyone sets themselves up as a guru and declares their opinions to be gospel truth. Link building is such an area where far too many people shoot off their mouths.
Then inexperienced webmasters gullibly follow the guru and chuck internal link building in the waste basket. Unless you have access to the algorithms of for instance Google. There simply is no way to know 100% how the SEs value links.
Flow from one to another
Good internal links from your homepage to each of the internal pages allow smooth navigation that flows easily. Don’t try to be clever and use wacky ideas; what you need is a very simple and clear format of navigation. This is what the SEs are looking for and they will pick up on which of your internal pages you consider the most important. Your internal links helps tremendously to boost the ranking of specific web pages.
So it is logical to say internal links are an optimisation effort, but it is also more than that. Internal links are usability and this is how your website traffic manoeuvres your website. So neglecting your internal links is a seriously bad idea where SEO is concerned as well as where your potential clients are
Never compare value of links
It is a mistake to compare the value of outside links to that of the value of your internal links. They are not the same at all and should both be looked at within their own niche. Your external links are important yes and judge their value according to their criteria and merit. Then look at your internal links in terms of SEO value as well as web traffic value. See outside and internal links as two totally different aspects of your website.
You should never confuse them and never neglect either in favour of the other. So instead of tearing your hair out in chunks trying to get other websites to link to you, turn your eyes inward. Stop underestimating the power of internal navigation optimisation. User-friendly sites are crucial to not only boost the rankings of your web pages, but also for your conversion rate.
