The factors that determine how a search engine ranks a website can be varied and numerous and different search engines use different algorithms in order to determine the results that are displayed to users when a relevant search query is made. Whilst all the factors are not specifically known and the amount of influence they have is not widely available from each search engine, it is generally accepted that links are an important part of search engine optimisation and a factor that really affects how a website is ranked in search results.

The links that are used by websites can determine how successful the website is in search engine optimisation. It is not merely a case of having as many links as possible and the website being ranked highly by the search engines. There are many different issues to consider when adding links to a website in order to improve its position in the results and some of these issues can make a significant difference in how successful this method of search engine optimisation is for the business.

Internal links are always useful within a website as it helps the web spiders to locate, visit and index the different pages of a site more easily and this is of course beneficial for the webmaster too as the search engines will have more information about the products and services a business offers and will be more likely to provide searchers that have corresponding needs with this information when they carry out a search. However, internal links are not the only type of link needed in search engine optimisation. External links are also of great importance and can help the search engines find and respect a website more easily. If another website is already ranked highly by a search engine and is viewed as offering high quality content and features a link to another website, the search engine will be more likely to view this other website as being of high quality too.

The anchor text in the links is also of significance. Research suggests that anchor text that is an exact match to a search term will be more advantageous for a business than text that features keywords but also features other text too. This can vary between different search engines but is an important point for consideration for those involved in SEO.

There are many more issues to consider when creating links for a website as part of a search engine optimisation campaign but these two points are some of the first that should be considered. The influence of each of the factors in the building of links can vary depending on the search engine and the algorithm used so should all be contemplated and treated as important.

At SEO Consult we work with our clients to ensure that they use the most efficient and effective search engine optimisation methods to improve their ranking in the search results of the major search engines and to increase the amount of traffic to their websites.
