The fastest way to get webmasters in a knot is when there is an abrupt drop in the website’s search engine ranking and they cannot find out what is wrong or how to fix it. Some in-depth website scrutiny will usually give you an understanding of why the ranking has dropped.

Knowing what to look for is also the way to remedy the situation to prevent any further slide down the SERPs ladder. The first thing to do before looking for the problem elsewhere is to find out whether there has been a change in the search engine algorithm. This is important as any algorithm changes can have a significant impact, often negative, on the ranking of your web pages.

Made changes lately?

When you do any re-designing of your web pages or you decide to optimise a specific web page for new keywords and keyword phases you will experience a drop in your ranking. The search engine filters put new websites and changed web pages into what is called the ‘sandbox’. It means your website or web pages will have to do some maturing before it will start ranking as well. Dynamic websites can be problematic as well.

If you have a dynamic website, check that it has been made as search engine friendly as possible. Most search engine spiders will not read dynamic URLs, so this can lead to a drop in ranking.

Spam alert

Educate yourself on exactly what is considered internet spam so that you can easily identify any spamming tactics that you may have inadvertently used. Make sure that you have not used any hidden text or cloaking techniques and check that you are not guilty of keyword stuffing. Redirects are another ranking killer. If you are using any spam techniques you have killed your search engine optimisation effort and you will have been labelled a spam site. Once you have been labelled as a spam site, you will need expert help to try and salvage things.

Your links

Check up on your inbound links, especially the newest ones as these might be the culprit to your unexpected rank drop. Also, if you do not continuously work at link building from high ranking and reputable websites, your ranking will start to drop. You need to keep building links from relevant websites that do not use spam techniques and do not come from dodgy neighbourhoods. Your website will be judged upon the value of your link websites and you will be penalised for associating your website with websites with a bad reputation.

Your server

Your webhosting server is often an overlooked problem that can lead to an unwelcome drop in ranking position. If your server is not reliable it leads to problems for the search engine spiders. When they try to access your website to spider it for fresh content and your server is down then they will simply move on.

Your SEO

All your SEO efforts will be in vain if you do not do website maintenance and understand the impact all the issues mentioned above has on your SERPs. Often many of these problems crop up due to ignorance and not deliberate actions, thus educate yourself to avoid them and to give your optimisation the chance to keep your website ranking healthy.

  5. Ranking for a few of my websites that are in first page of SERP dropped drastically recently. I discovered that it was due to links to drug and porn sites in my forums. There were ten of thousands of them. I took time to delete them and I could literally see improvement in ranking.
