- Unfriendly Search Engine content which contains nothing that can’t be indexed such as those pages that are stuffed full of graphics and flash are often overlooked by search engines. A site that is optimised usually contains at least 200 words of keyword rich content per page along with title pages and Meta tags.
- Not enough popular links is another sin. Search engine robots are continually trying to qualify results that are shown in search engines and one way they do this is to track and test not only the number of links but also the quality of these links. The larger and better the quality of incoming links, the higher your rankings will be. Links that compliment your offerings that are relevant and come from good neighbourhoods are number one. Spam or link farming is frowned on seriously. Many search engines place a lot of importance on linking for SEO purposes, so it is wise to spend as much time and effort you need to in order to get it right.
- Not doing any keyword research can be fatal to your SEO campaign. It is important that you know which keywords or keyword phrases people are searching for or which ones sell products like yours, this way you will be able to not only discover your niche market but be able to tap into them directly. You objective should be to find and zone into people who are searching for your product and this relies on constant research and updates, identifying changes, strengths and weaknesses in your campaign.
- Don’t leave optimising until after you have designed your website. This can be a fatal error and who wants to sit with a fabulously expensive and well designed site if nobody sees it? Optimising your site upfront can also point out any potential flaws in it layout which may hinder traffic later on, thing such as information flow, bad links and others. It is better to be aware of these issues early on rather than later when they could result in loss of revenue and or reputation.
- You need to support the Conversion process fully. Sending your customers round and round in circles is a bad thing; having your pages result in Error 404’s is a bad thing. Having a site that is not user friendly is a bad thing. Not supporting the conversion process fully is often the first reason that websites fail, offering the buying public a website that is messy, unreliable, unsecured, error ridden, hard to navigate and one that does not understand its user’s needs no matter pretty it is, will result in the inability to convert a visitor into a customer.
- It is not a good idea to submit your website to thousands of search engines, rather concentrate on a handful of quality search engines that have the ability to drive traffic to your site; you will save yourself time and effort in the long run. Think how tiring it would be to juggle a thousand search engines at one time.
