When you decide to create a new website, when you decide to better the one you already have, search engine optimization should be the first thing that comes to mind. And rightly so, without optimization your website will never get anywhere other than the last SERP listing. The other problem that you face is the fact that bad SEO is just as bad as no SEO. So you need to think very carefully before you tackle any optimization efforts.
Making mistakes
Making mistakes with your search engine optimization is a sure way to get your rank lowered instead of improved. There is also a wealth of mistakes that many website owners make, innocently, that are rather silly mistakes. However, silly or not, all SEO mistakes cost you in the end so it is imperative to avoid any and all mistakes that you can.
If you feel uneasy about attempting to see to your own optimization without guidance, employ a helping hand. There are a good many optimization companies out there that are more than willing to help you out. Their fees are reasonable and their advice, help and expertise is invaluable to you and your website as well as the success thereof. If you are keen to go it alone, listen up because here are some silly optimization mistakes to steer well clear of at all costs.
Favouritism among the engines
When you start showing certain, weaker search engines favouritism, you are in trouble. There are three major search engines; those are MSN, Yahoo and Google the giant. MSN refers the least traffic to websites out of the trio. Yahoo follows suit in second place but still comes nowhere near to what Google refers. Google refers between 50% and 80% of web traffic to websites. So, favouring MSN or Yahoo would be a silly mistake. Don’t tweak your website to rank favourably in MSN or Yahoo if it is going to lower your rank in Google.
Site maps, descriptions and redesigning
Not having a properly put together site map for your website is a silly mistake of monumental proportions. A site map not only makes it easier for your human searchers to navigate your website. It makes is easy as pie for your web crawlers to get around your website too. Without a site map, you make life more difficult for the crawlers. This means that they will be inclined to rank your website less favourably than if you had a good site map to help them around.
Descriptions for each page and each Meta tag may be a hassle, but it is a hassle that is well worth the effort. When you have the exact same descriptions and tags duplicated on each of your web pages, you are in for trouble. Your descriptions, titles and tags are the most important parts of your web page. They are prime real estate for keywords and they should be focused on the content of a specific page and not on the website in general.
One huge mistake that many website owners make is to completely redesign everything when they redesign. Yes, redesigning means taking on a fresh, new outlook. However, you are going to alienate the web crawlers and you are going to have to start the climb from the very bottom all over again.
