Nothing in this world is without mistakes, but mistakes in SEO can be very costly and the more we can avoid them the better for ensuring success of your SEO campaign.

Mistakes to do with keywords

Even experienced SEO experts make the mistake of choosing keywords which they think describe their website but which in actuality people don’t use in their searches.  This can be the make or break of any SEO campaign and no mater how resourceful you may be, if you can’t think of keywords, get a good keyword suggestion tool as this will go a long way to finding keywords that are right for your product.

Quite often developers leave the <title> tag empty and yet this is by far the most important place to have your keyword as this is what shows in the search results as your page title.

Once you have narrowed down your keywords you need to modify your content and place them where it makes sense, better still, bold them italicise them or highlight them.  Placing them without any thought to their impact can have quite a negative affect on your rankings.

It is a common error to assume that SEO is all about getting Meta keywords and description correct, yet Meta tags are becoming a thing of the past and as much as you create them, they won’t help you rank well.

Developers who use images for headings are doing you no favours, they may make your website look great and capture the readers interest, but if you want to get those readers to your website, try modifying your headings in a style sheet instead.

Programming errors

While Flash sites are very attractive they mean nothing to a search engine, but if you have no option but to design your website with Flash you must also provide an HTML version of it.  Flash content cannot be read by spiders, so they will in fact sabotage your rankings.

JavaScript is also not read by search engine spiders, so try to avoid them when are building your navigation menus, but if you cant you need to consider building a sitemap so that you make sure your links are ‘crawlable’.

URL’s are very important and having keywords in them is vital if you want to get ahead in your rankings as this will give you’re an advantage over your competitors.  Don’t have URL’s that contain no keywords.

Consistency

Don’t be fooled that once your have optimised your job is finished; this is certain death to your rankings.  You have to consistently optimise keeping your eye on your competition all the time as well as keeping an eye on the every changing search engine algorithms.

You also need to constantly maintain and make changes to your site, you have to keep it dynamic as this is what search engines like.

Keep careful control on your backlinks too, quantity is not better than quality, so don’t even think of getting involved in link farms which can lead your site to getting banned.
