Going out and sourcing inbound links makes up a big chunk of the work anyone has to do for SEO. It’s hard work, and it can take a long time to get a decent link profile. Wouldn’t it be great if some of these links just came to you?
Of course, it is possible to attract links. This should be at least part of your aim when you’re thinking about content. Posting linkable content is the first step to attracting links over time.
*Resource articles. The usual advice for attractive content is to post how-to articles, top 10 lists and the like. This is good advice. These kinds of articles are attractive, and easy enough to write if you’re composing your own material. Simply featuring these is not enough, though, to attract links. They are common enough not to be that attractive.
To get your article to the point where it is viewed as an industry resource, it has to be something special. First and foremost, it must cover a topic that hasn’t been covered sufficiently before. This means that you can re-cover a topic if the existing range of articles is unimpressive. It must also be easy to read. *Video content: Video content can be good for attracting links, particularly when it’s of a practical use. This kind of content is often overlooked during SEO, because it can’t be directly read by the search engines. If others in your industry are publishing video content, though, you’ll probably need to feature some to keep up.
The upside of search engines not being able to read video content is that you can post it wherever you like without fear of duplicate content issues. YouTube is becoming a search force of its own as well. There may come a time when featuring on YouTube is as good as ranking well in Google.
*Images. Again, image-based content is slightly overlooked by search engine optimisation experts because it doesn’t have the same effect as text for the search engines. As sites like Lolcats have demonstrated, however, image-based content can be a big draw if it’s interesting enough. Not everyone can get away with humorous content on their pages, and not everyone has the resources, but there are other types of images that work well on a business site. Charts and other graphics can be a great addition to your content plan.
One consideration that needs to be taken into account with images is that they slow down your page load time. Keep the file size small. Remember that computer screens need a much lower-quality file than print.
As you should know, posting linkable content should be just a part of the work you do to generate inbound links. Going out and looking for links, and participating in online communities, should make a part of your SEO plan. Having links come to you, however, is the ideal situation. Get some linkable content into your SEO content plan.
