Search engine optimisation is by no means just about the search engines. If you aren’t able to keep internet users on your pages, then your SEO has failed to some degree. This failure will lead to a fall in your rankings over time as the search engines notice how little satisfied your site’s users are. In short, to have really worked, your SEO plan needs to include some conversion consideration.

Strangely enough, thinking like your customers can be the best way forward when looking at conversions as part of search engine optimization. Think about some of the questions you have in mind when you approach a new site:

1. Is it annoying? It might sound petty, but an annoying site can be off-putting before any of the information it contains is readable. If your site is too slow, too garish or simply too old-looking, you might be losing users.

2. Can I trust it? This is a question that sits in the back of every internet user’s mind, particularly when approaching a new site. There are so many dangers on the net, and so many can be avoided simply by clicking back to the search pages. You can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia about making your site look trustworthy.

3. Can I understand it? You can have the loveliest site in the world, but if your users can’t understand what you’re trying to say, you’re lost. It’s important never to patronise your site’s users, but it is equally important not to assume that they think like you do. It might seem logical to have four text boxes on a page, but to many users this layout will be confusing. Keep things simple, and make sure to test your pages thoroughly as part of your SEO content plan.

4. Am I inspired to move further? ‘Inspired’ is perhaps too lofty a word, but it is essentially what you’re trying to do when you want internet users to explore your site.

There are several things that can interfere with an internet user’s desire to move further into your site. The first, and most obvious, is because they don’t like the site. Dealing with issues of annoyance, trustworthiness and understanding should get rid of this problem. Once you have convinced them that they like your site, however, you need to give them a reason to move further into it.

5. Is it easy to do what I want to do? Although an internet user’s commitment to your site increases with the amount of time they spend on it, there are certain crucial points at which you can still lose them. Clumsy checkout systems are a prime example of this. In a number of studies, research has shown that a huge number of transactions are abandoned at the checkout stage because of the system used.

Checkouts are just one example, and not every site dealing with SEO has such systems. Regardless of the type of conversion you’re after, it is vital to make sure that closing the deal is effortless for your customers.
