The Internet has changed the way people do business so much, it is not surprising that people often feel that having a business today is like riding a run-away roller coaster. What is even more bewildering is that it keeps on changing and going faster. Just as soon as you think you can breathe, something totally new jumps onto that run-away roller coaster.

Then the goal posts change radically and it’s a case of adapt or bow out of online marketing. The mega corporations have it easier; they simply employ an army of experts to do it all for them. For the rest of the marketers, it means you have to keep up. The new buzz word on the Internet is social bookmarking. If you for one moment think that social media is for the young only, you are in for a rude awakening.

Increase web traffic

Social bookmarking is an excellent tool for search engine optimisation and a great way to get web traffic to your website. For those websites that rely heavily on affiliate marketing to boost their income, social bookmarking is not only a valuable tool, but it is also free.

All internet users know about bookmarking your favourite websites to visit. Everyone knows this is the fastest and easiest way to get to those websites. Social bookmarking websites allow you place your favourite bookmarks on their websites.

What websites such as Dig, StumbleUpon, Delicious and other then do is place identifying tags and keywords on your favourites. This makes is far easier to find them again at a later stage.

Where the social part comes in is that your tags are public domain. Others see the tags and have a look. In the event that they like what they see, they will bookmark it.  The act of bookmarking then adds a crucial link for your SEO. Every bookmark that you add to one of your web pages means a back link to your website.

Do research

It is the best to research the different bookmarking websites, as they do not all work exactly the same. You need to make certain that the bookmarking websites will add value to your business if you register with them.

There are various ways to encourage people to bookmark to your website. It is not good enough simply to register on a myriad of social bookmarking websites. The goal is to get people to link so use every opportunity to try to convince them it will be a good idea to link.

Keep the edge

You can do this through articles and newsletters and of course the highly important blog that you should have. If you know what information will have value for people this works well. You have to know who your target audience is to get this right. Social bookmarking has become part of the roller coaster and a tool to be used. Remember though that it is a tool. It is not the beginning and end. You have to use search engine optimisation in every aspect of your marketing and never neglect one SEO aspect in favour of another.
