Aim to get content control for inbound links

The absolute best inbound links you can get will have at least two things going for them: a) they will come from sites whose topic is closely related to yours, and b) they will come from within the text published on pages of a site.

Think about it. Getting a link in a spot that regularly features links on another site’s pages is going to get a bit less link juice than something embedded in relevant content, and it’s going to get you less direct traffic from the link as well. So why don’t more SEO experts concentrate on getting their clients content-embedded links?

Getting a content-embedded link is a lot more difficult than any other form of link, because it requires some kind of intellectual engagement with your page’s concepts. More than anything, it takes time, as you need to build some form of relationship with the site’s owner. This is one of the reasons optimisation experts tend to work toward other forms of link-building.

Putting in the extra effort can be worthwhile in ways that go well beyond search engine optimization. In order to put in this effort, though, you need to know which avenues are available to your site. Most of these will involve the provision of quality content. Here are just a few of the ways to attempt to get content-based inbound links:

  • Sponsor a blog post. This can be a good method of getting links, regardless of whether you’re aiming to boost your in-content links or just your link profile generally. While many site owners will take offence at an email that baldly asks ‘How much for a link?’ most bloggers will be open to having one of their posts sponsored in some form by a business. Sponsorship can take the form of offering goods or services for the blogger to give to their readership, sponsoring a competition, or outright sponsorship of the blog site.
  • Post links within comments. This is a sneaky way of getting inbound links, but one that most site owners tolerate. On some pages, comments appear as part of the body of text. This doesn’t happen with all comments sections, and it depends on the way the site’s system handles comments. If the comment is featured as a part of a body of text, it may even be featured as part of the page’s presentation in the search pages, meaning you get even more exposure.
  • Have your content posted on someone else’s page. This is ultimately the way you’re most likely to have your link published the way you want. Although the other methods increase the likelihood of a content-based link, there is still a chance that they may not publish your link as you wish it to appear. Having your content published as a whole means that you have ultimate control over where and when keywords appear, and how links are formed. For this reason, it is a good idea to investigate any options for publishing content on other sites where you can.
