The recent agreement between Yahoo! and Microsoft has undoubtedly made these companies a bigger threat to Google. Combining their forces, they are now more able to compete against Google in the online search industry. Yahoo! and Microsoft were the two biggest competitors for Google and now they make one very strong competitor indeed.

Recent data collected by Statcounter is showing that Bing is already increasing in popularity with more and more internet users turning to this search engine when they have a query. In the month of July, Bing gained market share and this could be setting extra alarm bells off for Google. Of the share of the search market in the U.S, Bing increased its market share from 8.23% in June, to 9.41% in the month of July. The market share of the companies Yahoo! and Microsoft combined has increased from 19.27% in June to 20.36% in July. These are encouraging results for the two companies in their quest to increase the number of users they have and their influence and strength within the online search industry.

However, even though these companies are now being viewed as posing a bigger threat to Google and its powerful position more than when they were operating separately, Google is still the most used and popular search engine by some margin. In June, Google’s market share was at 78.48% and this did drop slightly in the month of July taking it to 77.54% but this is still a massive share of the market for this company and so the level of worry for Google at this time may not yet be excessive.

Even more encouraging for Google is the continued power and strength it has within the worldwide search industry. In June, Google had market share of 89.9% in the worldwide search market and this decreased a tiny bit in the month of July taking the market share to 89.23% in July. In comparison to these impressive results, the combined worldwide search market share for Microsoft and Yahoo! was calculated to be 8.45% in June and slightly higher in July at 8.77%. The increase in market share for Microsoft and Yahoo! is definitely encouraging for them and they are certainly moving in the right direction. However, they have a very long way to go in order to catch up with the mighty Google. Even with the users of Microsoft and Yahoo! combined, the number is not yet anywhere near the number of search engine users that use Google for their query needs.

The information provided by Statcounter was accumulated from 258 million search engine referral clicks from the U.S search market and 1.006 billion search engine referral clicks from the worldwide search market.
