Breadcrumb navigation is not a recent phenomenon. A number of years ago, some hardworking designer came up with the idea of featuring the central topics of visited pages in a line at the top of a web page, enabling internet users to click back without having to click through all pages visited. The use of breadcrumb navigation has died down a little bit, but it may soon rise in popularity again.

It is thought that breadcrumb navigation gives a page a substantial advantage in search engine optimisation, as the style of navigation lays out important links and keywords very prominently at the top of the page. Site owners and SEO pros put a lot of effort into optimising navigation, usually sticking their hard work in the usual place at the side of the page. This is a fairly advantageous position, but breadcrumb navigation, which sets out the trail of keywords at the top of the page, is even better.

Breadcrumbs are not for everyone

Not every site is suited to this style of navigation. On some pages, having a list of connected topics might just infuriate the user and put them off, which is exactly what you don’t want. On other pages, the style might simply look too out of place. Breadcrumb navigation can come in handy for every site; however, in that it can be a source of inspiration for the navigation system you do choose.

Designing or optimizing navigation can be a tricky task, particularly if you have a large site. You can talk to our experts at SEO Consult Australia about navigation optimization. Search engine optimization experts generally want to overhaul site structure to ensure that every page can be found easily. Navigation gets polished up along the way, providing a great place to feature keywords. Even if you’re not using the breadcrumb style, breadcrumb navigation can be used as a resource to plan out exactly which keywords to feature where.

Using breadcrumbs for inspiration

Plotting out the breadcrumb navigation for each page is a great way to pull out the important navigational factors on your site. Generally, sites tend to rely on their site structure as a basis to design navigation. This can result in a navigational system which is over-complicated and hard to understand at a glance. You need to find a way to pull out the most important links, while not overlooking the paths that internet users are likely to take.

This is where the breadcrumb style comes in. It can help to manually draw up the structure of your site. Once this is done, look at each of your main pages and consider what the breadcrumb navigation would look like. Which pages can be used as major categories? Which ones could be easily skipped over? Sketch out the keywords that feature on the main pages in the trail to use as your navigation text.

The pages that emerge as major centres on your site with this method are likely to be the main pages to feature in your navigation. Use the insight you’ve gained when drawing up your menus.
