PDF documents are a popular choice of format favoured by many because of the many features they offer and many company’s prefer this method of capturing and storing company information, so it is not unusual for webmasters to make use of PDF documents when designing a website and in fact they can help gain many benefits for SEO if they are indexed by a Search engine’s result pages, or SERP’s.  Many major search engines today have algorithms which make provision for the reading of content contained in these documents, so the option to include them on a website makes good sense.

How to you get PDF’s indexed in SERP’s?

PDF’s can take the format of either text or graphics and it is suggested that you use the text version as most search engines don’t, or cannot read graphic files.  Try submitting your PDF’s to book marking websites as this will help with your rankings.  Include title, subject, keyword and author because as with any webpage, titles and keywords need to be optimised.

There is no description section available for PDF documents, so search engines look instead at the first text of the first paragraph and use that instead.  In light of this it is suggested that you place suitable text in these areas.  Include Tags and Alt Tags for images using Acrobat PDF creator and include links.

Links along with suitable anchor text should be used as well as link backs to your own website.  This is necessary because over time PDF’s change hands, plus this link back will help drive more traffic to your site which will help your SEO and rankings on search engines.

Include Fast View which enables PDF files to be loaded page by page instead of waiting for the entire document to download before you can read it.  Users can read a page while waiting for the others to download.

Keep an eye on size too, any PDF document should be of a reasonable size as search engines don’t like indexing files that take ages to download, and you run the risk of the SERP’s neglecting to index your file.

Apart from that, keep in mind that content is king and as with any normal web page the content you include in a PDF document should be optimised the same.

PDF documents do not carry a lot of weight with search engines and may take longer to index, depending on search engine robots but they still have the ability to you’re your SEO campaign and it is still viable to include them on your site as the additional content they provide helps with long rail searches.  Apart from that PDF documents also provide users with information they can refer back to at a later date.

Giving your users access to PDF documents is easy and when you include them on your site and if the content contained in them duplicated what is on your site, they don’t breach search engine’s duplication laws because HTML always ranks above PDF documents.
