Success is defined as selecting a goal, charting a process to attain that goal and then eventually attaining the goal. In a perfect world the process would be as simple as that. There is a whole unseen section in between deciding on what the goal is and finally attaining the goal. The missing piece of the puzzle is often called data collation. This is important is in any business environment is shows how the business is performing and where the business is headed.

In the business of websites the very same is true. In order to understand and know how a website is performing data needs to be collated, this is called web analytics. In essence web analytics is the measurement; collection and reporting of data on the internet in order to accurately gauge the activity on a website. This is important for the obvious reasons that every website owner would love for every visitor to be converted into a buying customer.

At its very basic ideal a website is a tool that is used to sell a product or service. Where sales people would walk from door to door or business to business previously websites in essence are the sales people for the business. It is this reason and this reason alone that demands specific attention be paid to how the website is performing. In very much the same way that a manager would manage the effectiveness of his sales team so too web analytics governs the effectiveness of the website.

Strengthening your sales force

As we have already established websites are essentially the sales force of the internet. Using web analytics will allow a website owner to accurately measure the performance of the website. Actively calculating traffic on the site will indicate the attractiveness of the site. The conversion rate will tell the truth about what visitors think of the product, product price and overall feeling of the website.

These are essentially the differences between why one person can become a millionaire in less than 24 hours and why another person has had string after string of failed website. Gathering accurate data is the means whereby a dying website can be remade into a literal cash cow and bring in huge streams of revenue.

Setting the game up to win

At any given time period all over the world someone, somewhere is surfing the internet looking for something. The differences in the various surfers have been fine tuned to indicate the potential they effect on websites. Someone surfing the internet because they’re bored may be more challenging to convert than someone who is surfing because they are actively seeking something.

By measuring the amount of visitors a website receives and also the amounts of clicks on specific things on site, the web analytics will show the progression of the changes made to the site previously. If changes have been made and still the conversion rate is low then further data will have to be collected and other changes made to the site.

Knowing the intended end result will help

Many companies make the mistake of designing a website and then sitting back and hoping that the internet will magically provide the sales they need. Websites are the sales force of the internet but they need to be given directives in order to be effective. Knowing the amount of sales that the website needs to achieve is the starting point to actually getting there.

Once a course has been charted and a goal identified, web analytics will accurately pin point every stage of the progression to attaining the goal. Employing a company that is skilled in this field is tantamount to success.
