Using link farms for the building of links means that natural and relevant links are not gained through development of the website and in a suitable amount of time in the eyes of the search engines. Often, links from link farms will not be of a high quality and linking to this kind of website can damage the online reputation of a business. Links are a vital part of search engine optimisation but only links that have been carefully selected and that are of a high quality and relevancy to the website of the business will be advantageous.

Duplicate content can also be an issue for businesses too. If the same content appears on more than one web page of a website then the search engines may view this as an attempt at manipulation in order to achieve improved ranking results and then these websites may not be ranked highly at all. Whilst the punishments a website incurs from the different search engines varies depending on the site, duplicate content can have a negative effect and so should be avoided if possible.
