Directing attention to important pages

You know which pages on your site are the most important for your business, but other people don’t. More importantly, the search engines don’t. Others can’t know which pages are important unless you tell them. Finding a way to make your important pages more prominent is a big part of the work of SEO.

If you’ve never optimised your site, the only page you can guarantee has some prominence on your site is your home page. Then again, if you’ve never performed any search engine optimisation, the prominence of even that naturally prominent page is in question. It is important for every site owner to find out the steps to take to highlight the most important pages on their site.

Factors that lead to prominence

*Location: If a page is fifteen clicks away from your home page, the search engines are going to read that it’s not a particularly important page. It’s never a good idea to bury a page so far back in your site, unless you never want it to be indexed. Keep your main pages within a few clicks of the home page. Important pages should be kept even closer.

*Keywords: Keywords are central to so much in SEO, and it’s no different when you want to target a particular page for prominence. Connections are everything when it comes to this point. If a page has links to other important pages in your site, its own importance will rise. You reinforce hyperlinks by linking through keywords. Remember only to use related keywords for these links.

*Links: The more inbound links an internal page has, the more important it will appear to the search engines.

Finding out what’s important

The first step that needs to be taken is finding out which pages are the important ones on your site. This may sound like a simple step, but the pages that are most attractive to you aren’t always going to be the pages that are important to internet users. Businesses are often surprised at the information that internet users find attractive. Finding out this information should be a part of your initial search engine optimisation and internet marketing research.

Of course, the equation goes the other way as well. The things that internet users find important may not fit in with your business objectives. This doesn’t mean that you should dump your objectives in order to please your site users. Instead, it’s possible to make use of the information you have on your site users to re-work important pages so that they have more appeal. Prominence: it’s all about attention

Drawing attention to important pages can just be a matter of giving them a little SEO TLC. Basically, the more attention you pay to your important pages, the more likely it is that the search engines will pay attention, too. Boost the importance of your main pages by keeping them prominent in your SEO plan.
