Good SEO means making friends

No site can succeed all on its lonesome. Successful sites aren’t hermit sites, even if they appear to be on the outside. Sites have to have a lot of connections with the rest of the net in order to be successful with the search engines. Basically, good search engine optimisation means making a lot of friends and keeping them.

Why does SEO require friendships? It all goes back to the way that the search engines work. While once upon a time the content of pages was an incredibly important factor in rankings calculations, these days reputation is more important. The search engines examine a site’s reputation in two ways: what is said about the site around the net, and the sort of sites that link back to them.

Of all the parts of search engine optimization, this area is the one that the most people have trouble getting their heads around. It’s fairly understandable. When you’re concentrating on improving your business, you tend to focus inwards. For successful SEO, however, that focus needs to be adjusted.

Stage 1: Forging friendships

Most businesses will have connections in their industry through natural networking. Not every online business does, though, and SEO is a good time to start. When planning out your optimisation campaign, you should be able to identify the major players in your area of your industry. After studying their sites, it’s a good idea to identify ways to forge relationships with them. Look out for comments sections, reciprocal opportunities, guest posting, and similar chances to forge some kind of relationship with other site owners. It’s important to remember that relationships take time to build up. Friendship building activities should make up a part of your ongoing online efforts.

Stage 2: Playing nice

Once you have established some kind of relationship with other site owners, bloggers and general internet communities, there is no time to rest. You need to build on the relationship constantly, essentially making yourself a part of their internet social life.

The internet can be a very harsh world to operate in, but strangely enough people are more forgiving and generous on the net than they are in real life. If you begin participating in the forums and social networks of your industry, and your participation is consistent and undemanding, you will find that you continue to build relationships over time.

Stage 3: Reaping the rewards

When you have established friendships in your industry or various internet communities, you will find that the rewards come flowing in of their own accord. The people you know will discuss you in their articles or comments, will provide you with links, and will give you opportunities to promote your business naturally. The internet is primarily a social place.

Once you begin to reap rewards, it’s important not to let things slide. You can only enjoy ongoing SEO benefits if you continue to reciprocate attention. Continue to comment on your friends’ blogs, and post to their site.
