Google is currently the most popular search engine worldwide and has recently been attracting even more attention and interest than before. The Google Doodle is a popular feature that is often displayed on the Google website. It appears within the Google logo which is situated above the search box where users of the search engine enter in their search terms. The doodle is often related to something significant taking place at that time or in remembrance of something that has happened in the past. Significant days in history, anniversaries, birthdays, announcements, launches, holidays, major events and any other occasions that are deemed appropriate and of interest by the Google team are often depicted through the Google Doodle. When the Google Doodle is clicked on, the user is taken to a web page of search results related to the doodle subject. The websites that are listed in these results can experience a major increase in traffic whilst the doodle is displayed.

Regular users of Google are no longer surprised to see a Google Doodle and many will regularly click on the doodle to investigate what the image is representing. However, a recent Google Doodle has had Google users very perplexed and confused. On 5th September 2009, Google decided to feature a doodle of a flying saucer that appeared to be abducting a letter ‘o’ from the Google logo. However, unlike the normal Google Doodle, this image appeared not to be referring to a specific event. When the image was clicked on, users were taken to a results page for ‘unexplained phenomenon’ but not one specific event relevant to that day. This led to a huge interest from internet users with many users worldwide trying to discover the meaning behind the Google Doodle. Google refused to give a solid explanation for the doodle and this only increased interest even further.

This interest and determination of Google users to find out the truth resulted in ‘unexplained phenomenon’ being recorded as the most searched for search term carried out that day. This demonstrates the impressive power and influence Google has over its users. Users of the Google search engine not only turn to Google for their searching needs but are also interested in other areas of Google such as the Google Doodle.

There were many different suggestions made in order to explain the choice of image but it seems the truth is now known. The UFO image that featured in the Google logo on 5th September was in honour of a Japanese video game. The game is called ‘Zero Wing’ and the doodle was representing the 20th anniversary of this game.

The incredible amount of interest and how this doodle affected users and what they used Google to search for displays the significant influence and important role Google plays in search engine optimisation. Google is the favourite for many users worldwide and this means that those who are serious about search engine optimisation need to have their website ranked highly in the Google search results.
