Many who are currently involved in search engine optimisation have been working to help optimise websites under the assumption that the keywords meta tag the website has is of significance and can affect how the website is ranked in the search results of Google when a relevant search query is placed. However, Google is claiming that this is not the case at all and that the keywords meta tag is not a factor Google takes into consideration when ranking its websites.
Matt Cutts from Google is claiming that the keywords meta tag did play a role in how a website was ranked in the past but that this is no longer the case. Keyword meta tags are no longer viewed as a reliable and useful indicator for Google when producing its search results because many webmasters and others involved in search engine optimisation were manipulating the keyword meta tags on websites and gaining an unfair advantage over other businesses.
Google wants to provide its searchers with relevant and helpful results every time a search query is placed. This way, there will be a high level of customer satisfaction and these users will return to the search engine again and again. However, the manipulation of keyword meta tags jeopardised the ability of Google to ensure that searchers were provided with relevant results. Those that were manipulating keyword meta tags would often fill the tag with irrelevant keywords that had no relation at all to the content of the website. This meant that the website would be ranked highly in the search results for certain keywords when in actuality it was of no relevance at all. This was a major issue for Google and why keyword meta tags no longer play a role.
Even though it has been suggested that the keyword meta tag is no longer of importance for Google search results many companies have continued to view it as a significant factor. Many businesses are even suing each other for using business names and other words in their keyword meta tags. Google is urging companies not to bother doing things like this if it is done with the belief that it is affecting their ranking in the Google results.
Google takes into consideration many different factors when ranking websites in its search engine and the algorithms it uses are constantly being updated and developed so that manipulation can not occur and so the users of Google are consistently provided with accurate and relevant results.
The keyword meta tag may not be of significance to Google when ranking websites but it is not known for sure if it has an effect in the search results of other search engines or if it will in the future. Therefore, optimising the keyword meta tag for a website can still be beneficial and can still play a role in search engine optimisation.
