Breadth of coverage is a fairly complicated concept, but one which every site owner needs to master if they want their SEO plan to be a success. It’s a term that’s been around the Google atmosphere for a while, but one which even many in the search engine optimisation industry don’t think about. Breadth of coverage is about covering your keywords to the satisfaction of the search engines.
The term comes from Google patents from 2003 and originally was related to the news algorithm. It is thought, however, that the search engines are using a breadth of coverage approach to modern keyword assessment. This is a far more complicated system than the simple ‘keyword + frequency = relevance’ equation that we started out with. Breadth of coverage is about how the content on and around the page relates to the keyword topically. This creates more reliable results on the SERPs.
Attaining a sufficient breadth of coverage is what quality SEO is all about, so an awareness of BOC is not really going to change anything for the smart site owner. It is important to be aware of the need for breadth of coverage, however, particularly if you have a complex keyword list.
How to ensure you’re covered
Creating a breadth of coverage involves creating a number of pages that are related in topic. It’s kind of like presenting your page within a book on that topic, rather than within a journal on all sorts of subjects.
- Make sure your keywords relate to each other. Constructing a keyword hierarchy is the most valuable thing you can do in terms of breadth of coverage. If you’re consulting with an SEO company, your consultant should draft up a rough hierarchy as part of the work. You can talk to us about this at SEO Consult Australia. If you have keywords that relate to a number of topics, it is vital to create separate branches leading out from your home page.
- Consolidate with internal links. Once you know where your keywords sit within your hierarchy, you can start planning the content of your pages. You can strengthen the appearance of your breadth of coverage significantly, simply by placing internal links on your pages.
- Internal linking is a standard strategy for search engine optimisation. When it comes to BOC, it’s just a case of knowing where your links are best pointed. For example, if on your pet health site you have structured a keyword string to begin at ‘puppies’ and end at ‘dogs in old age’, you need to decide where the relevant links should sit. This should create a supportive structure within that strand.
- Create content to back your keywords up. Following on from the above example, your pages should be devoted to the different stages in growth of people’s canine companions. Creating quality content should be a part of your SEO plan in any case, but in creating breadth of coverage you need to think about how your different pages relate to each other, following on logically from page to page.
