Sometimes, things just don’t go right, no matter what you do. It can happen in just about any area of search engine optimisation, and even seasoned professionals are subject to it. Call it Murphy’s Law, or just bad luck, but the search engines don’t always behave the way you expect them to. Altered titles are one of these areas.

You can’t work on your site’s search engine optimisation for very long without coming across talk of the importance of title tags. These tags are important to SEO for two reasons:

1. They are looked at early on by search engine spiders, and the keywords they contain have a certain amount of weight in the rankings calculation

2. Internet users take them into account when deciding whether or not to click.

Either reason is enough impetus to give your site’s title tags a little attention, but combine the two and optimising title tags becomes an important feature of your SEO work.

Title tags are important for SEO

Why would Google change title tags?

Google does change title tags, and there’s just no getting around it. Knowing why can help, though. SEO pros have long known that any page lacking a title tag will have one constructed for it. Google’s JohnMu explained late last year that the search engine will alter titles when the existing tag seems deficient. He defined those deficiencies as:

- A length that is too short

- The same across the whole site

- Titles that consist only of keywords.

If your titles are being changed, it’s probably a sign that you’re doing something wrong. Go back and look at the titles you have, to see if you’re including sufficient information. Unique titles are also important. If you’re having trouble with titles, or other areas of search engine optimisation, talk to our experts at SEO Consult Australia.
