Most online businesses are now aware of search engine optimisation and want to help their websites to be ranked highly in the search results of search engines because of the many advantages rankings like this can bring for a business. There are many different SEO techniques that are being used by business owners and SEO consultants trying to help them achieve success in the optimising of their websites but in order to carry out a successful search engine optimisation campaign, it is first necessary to understand a little bit about how the search engines and the web crawlers they use work and how information is retrieved from websites.

A web crawler is also commonly known as a search engine spider or a search engine robot and is an automated program that visits the many different websites available on the internet in order to retrieve suitable and helpful information for the search engines. A web crawler is a vital piece of technology for a search engine because it allows the search engine to gather information and evaluate the relevancy and authority of millions of different sites which could otherwise not be explored.

Different web crawlers work in slightly different ways but all web crawlers have the mission of exploring different websites available on the internet and retrieving suitable information from them so that they can be indexed by the search engine appropriately. Many different pieces of information are taken into consideration by the web crawlers when they visit a website. The URL of the website, the titles used in the web pages of the website, the meta tags that are present on the site, the content within the web pages and any links to and from and also within the website are also of great significance and are some of the most important parts of website crawling. As these factors are an important part of website crawling, they are also a significant part of search engine optimisation too.

After the necessary information has been gathered by a web crawler, the crawler returns back to its base and uses this information in the index of the search engine. However, web crawlers visit websites and the pages within the site many times so any changes and new developments within the website can be noted and used in the indexed information of the website. The search engine then uses other technology to search through the vast amount of information in the index when a search query is made so that the most useful and relevant results can be offered to the searcher.
