How to get out of SEO traps

A lot of the work of search engine optimization is exactly what you’d think – basic on-page and off-page work. However, the adjustments, keyword placements, and link building can only take place once a site has been cleared of all the myriad errors that are effectively blocking a good ranking. The average site falls into all kinds of SEO traps during its design, and these mistakes need to be rectified.

The trouble a lot of site owners face when they first approach SEO is that it is a very individual process. This often means that having the process described to you is not of much help. Your own site is unique, with its own problems, and needs to be treated individually. You can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia about this. Learning about others’ mistakes, however, can be helpful in developing a sense of what a good site really needs.

Learn to identify the traps

Strangely enough, the way to get out of an SEO trap is to understand how you got in it in the first place. This isn’t as easy as it seems. The major problem most site owners face is spotting the fact that their site contains such traps. A major problem SEO experts complain of is the reluctance of site owners to alter their sites, despite glaring SEO deficiencies.

Most often, the problem comes from an attachment to the site as it currently stands. There is an understanding of search engine optimisation as a kind of technical magic, which can make small adjustments that will improve rankings. This is true, but only when the site doesn’t contain blocks to search engine spiders, as most sites do.

For example, a newcomer to web design, without any prior knowledge of search engine optimisation, is likely to make a huge number of SEO mistakes in favour of a pretty site. The designer might use up all available space with images, making the site slow to download. They might decide to dazzle the site user with all the tricks at their disposal, including doorway pages, drop down menus and dissolving pop-ups. Even worse, a callow web designer, keen to have their fancy fonts seen exactly as they should be seen, might freeze the text in a graphic rather than embedding it in HTML.

None of these things might seem to be so bad before you think about them in terms of search engine optimisation. When you do, it becomes clear that concentrating on the appearance of a site creates blocks for search engine spiders. When these blocks are woven into the fabric of the site, they take a long time to get rid of.

Not many businesses will find themselves with this kind of site, but some do, particularly small businesses who can’t afford expert web design. There are inevitably elements of the above case, or similar, that you will encounter when you first approach SEO.

It is hard to adjust to SEO when the focus has been on web design. The best step to take is to start thinking like an SEO expert. Spot the traps.
