In many aspects of life, it’s the little things that count and this is doubly true online. Many a site owner has discovered in the process of testing that major changes to layout or information have had no effect, but the addition of a small security tag or similar touch has had a huge one. A few simple touches might be all you need to improve your traffic and conversion rates.

One of the challenges of search engine optimization is in improving traffic rates. Although many see this as the goal of SEO, it’s actually only part of the process, and you can discuss this with us at SEO Consult Australia. A site that doesn’t have decent traffic will soon take a dive in the rankings, as this is one of the factors the search engines take into account in the calculations. At the same time, the less time you have to spend on making your site attractive to internet users, the more you can devote to the more technical aspects of optimization.

This is where small changes come in. An analysis of your site might show that very small alterations, such as a change in language on your menu or re-positioning of information, will improve usability. This is particularly effective for e-commerce sites, where the smallest of alterations can make a big impact on conversions. The idea is an extension of the thought behind store layout and design. The placement of shelves, the width of aisles, and the display of goods at certain points in a store can affect the number of transactions. With an online store, the changes can be even smaller, with the same great effect.

A lot of the best and smallest changes you can make involve increasing the trustworthiness of your site. Other small touches may improve the usability or visibility of important aspects of your site.

*Credit card symbols. Although the modern internet user is aware that phishing sites commonly use official-looking logos and other items to lull users into a false sense of security, an official logo can still go a long way. It also informs the user right from the beginning whether they will be able to complete their transaction, saving a lot of frustration.

*Security symbols. These are essential if your site has any transactional component. Internet users are very cautious about revealing their financial details on a non-secure site. Even sites with ‘https’ pages will fare better with the extra assurance provided by security symbols. The effect is purely psychological, as such symbols can be faked as easily as credit card logos, but it helps.

*Placing key elements in prominent places. Instead of leaving the ‘add to cart’ button at the bottom of the page, try placing it at the side. The increased visibility makes a purchase seem like less effort to the user.

*Changing the colour of key elements. Colours are a highly emotional thing. Get your users excited about aspects of your site with vibrant colours, such as a bright blue ‘buy now’ button.
