It is commonly known amongst SEO professionals that it can be harder for a website that features a large amount of Flash to be ranked highly in the search results provided by the search engines. However, many businesses continue to develop websites that use a lot of Flash because they are unaware of the issues it can cause for their business in the future. If a business decides that they do want to run an SEO campaign and their website is largely based on Flash, there are some recommended steps that can help the website to be optimised effectively.

The most dramatic, but also most effective, way of handling a website based on Flash is to completely redesign the website and this time to do it using as little Flash as possible. Whilst this may seem unnecessary, if a website is solely based on Flash it will be incredibly hard for the web crawlers of the search engines to find and rank the pages of the site appropriately.

If this is not a feasible solution, it may be advisable for you to create a new homepage using HTML instead of Flash. This can require a lot less time and money and will provide a web page that the web crawlers can explore and index relevantly. This can be a helpful solution if you want the majority of your web pages to remain in Flash, but still want the search engines to rank your website in a top position. It is obviously not as beneficial as making all of your web pages within your website accessible and appealing to the search engines but it can help to improve your results.

Another potentially effective option for using Flash and achieving high rankings is to use a combination of HTML and Flash within your pages. This means that if your website is based on Flash, some will have to be removed and HTML added instead so that the web crawlers can explore your site more efficiently and thoroughly. With a mixture of HTML and Flash you will be able to keep some of the features of your site that use Flash, but also provide the web crawlers with useful information too.

Flash is not recommended for businesses involved in search engine optimisation, but there are ways to have some of your site in Flash and still be successful. Creating a site solely using Flash can be a big mistake, if you want your website to be ranked highly in the search results and should be avoided when possible.  However, we have seen that there are diverse solutions to this dilemma.
