How to structure SEO

Every newcomer to search engine optimisation quickly realises that they need a keyword list before their optimisation can proceed. Although other factors of SEO are just as important as keywords these days, keywords are still central to a good optimisation campaign. What many sites fail to do after selecting their keywords is form them into a proper structure.

Structure is very important for search engine optimisation. The search engines look at a site much as an academic would look at a well-referenced book. If a book claims to be an authority on politics, but has only one chapter on the subject, the academic will ignore it. However, if the book has other chapters on political history, politicians, theories on different political ideals, and political debate, the academic is likely to accept it as a noteworthy book. The same goes for your keywords and Google. The more conceptual links you have between keywords, the stronger your site seems.

There are two very basic kinds of SEO structure. The first is the simple keyword relation, which involves a group of keywords that are very closely related. The second is thematic, which involves keywords that may be linked, but run along distinct themes. The complexity of your keyword groupings is what determines the complexity of your SEO structure.

Complex keyword groupings

Developing a complex keyword structure requires the separation of keywords into related groups. Any SEO consultant will do this as part of their work, and you can talk to our consultants at SEO Consult Australia. The key is to separate out the different keywords, but to be mindful of their connections.

For example, a large site dealing with political history might want to target three areas of keywords: those related to political theory, well-known politicians, and historical political events. These are very distinct categories, but they would have obvious connections with each other.

If looking at the keyword structure on the page, this kind of site would look much like a family tree, with a head leading down to distinct roots. The only difference, and one that will help the site’s SEO work, is the connections between the groups, which can be used in hyperlinks to create a stronger support system.

Simple keyword groupings

Simple keyword relation is possibly a better strategy for small sites. When your site is focussed on one specific topic, your range of keywords is going to be fairly limited. This kind of structure looks more like a flow chart, with keywords relating directly to the home page. Of course, it is possible to overlay several keyword themes on top of each other on a small site, and this makes for a much more complicated SEO plan.

Keyword structure is all about making it easy for the search engines to confirm your page’s relevance through its relations. It should be noted that this is a very basic form of structural SEO. The keyword hierarchy of most sites requires a fair amount of consideration, and when in doubt it is always a good idea to consult a professional.
