It was revealed that Yahoo! filed a patent back in 2002 that explored the concept of using humans more in the ranking of search results provided by the search engine. This patent has been accepted and this means that changes to the Yahoo! ranking system may be taking place in the near future and these developments may mean some big changes for search engine optimisation.

Yahoo! is suggesting that this new method of ranking results will provide searchers with a better service. More relevant, useful and appropriate search results are what Yahoo! aims to offer its users and of course it also wishes to provide them with these results quickly and easily too. This new concept that Yahoo! has now patented involves the use of automated algorithms and the input of humans in order to index and rank web pages websites appropriately and efficiently.

The importance of human reviewers in the ranking process has been highlighted by Yahoo! for a few significant reasons. Yahoo! believes that it is easier for humans to identify pages that may not really be relevant to a search query but that may appear so to search engine software because of the use of certain keywords and other techniques like this. Humans will be able to spot this kind of manipulation more easily than the algorithms used and will therefore be able to treat these websites accordingly. Human reviewers can better understand what a website is about and gain a clear understanding of what is on offer quickly.

However, the technology used by search engines such as Yahoo! is still of utmost importance and this is why a combination of human editors and automated algorithms is what has been proposed by Yahoo! in order to deliver a superior search service. Due to the vast number of searches that are carried out using the major search engines each day, the numerous different queries and search terms that are used by searchers, and the huge number of new web pages and websites that are constantly being launched and updated online, it is impossible for human editors alone to remain on top of the search ranking process. Technology is needed in order to keep giving users the most relevant and updated information and the complexity of some algorithms used by current search engines is hugely impressive.

This is just another development in search engine optimisation that highlights the importance and significance of high quality and relevant content within the web pages of a website. It is essential that websites are developed for the users of the site and not just to appeal to the search engines. Ethical white hat SEO methods are what are needed in order to successfully optimise a website.
