There is an old saying that says that ignorance is bliss. For many people this statement holds true, as long as they are ignorant of something, they can go along blissfully unaware. Sometimes, however, this does not work out well for people and when it comes to SEO; it never works well to be ignorant.
Search engine optimization is an important part of creating, developing and maintaining a successful website. Without it, you will never be able to make decent profits from your ecommerce website. Being ignorant to the rules and regulations governing optimization is to set yourself up for a huge amount of trouble. Sometimes that trouble can be devastating to your website and can even be irreparable. So wise up about optimization to stay on top of your game.
The realities of ignorance
When you approach optimization with ignorance in tow, you can be sure to come across some bad information. The internet is populated by search engine optimization information, some good and some bad. Unfortunately, you have to pick out which is which and which is safe to use. You will not be able to navigate a landscape littered with untruths if you are ignorant. Understanding optimization takes time, dedication and patience. You cannot simply blunder through it in two ticks and expect to know everything there is to know.
The penalties involved
When you find yourself following the wrong SEO information, you could well be practicing black hat SEO without knowing it. Indeed, you probably wouldn’t even know what black hat SEO is if you have not tamed your ignorance into knowledge. When you use the improper optimization techniques, the penalties range from mild to quite harsh and severe.
Browsing through the information on the internet, you will come across tips to catapult you into top SERP ranks. Now, while some of this information may be helpful, the rest is more of a hindrance than a help. When you start finding that your SERP rank is dropping instead of increasing, you know that something is afoot. However, that is a mild case scenario and it can get much worse.
You could find your website banned from the search engines. This is a very problematic situation to be in as no searchers will be able to find your website at all. Once you get banned, the damage to your website’s reputation is just about impossible to repair. Getting back onto the search pages is going to take lots of hard work, hard work that you could have spared yourself.
Rules to take note of
Make sure that you have enough text and links visible on your website. Remember that search engines cannot see images, only text and tags. Make sure that you have enough text for keyword purposes as well as informing visitors. Use keywords in your text as navigational links within your website. This makes better use of text and keywords in your content.
Don’t like your web page or domain name? Well, just stick it out as is. Changing those names will alienate visitors and the search engines, causing your search rank to drop dramatically. It will also affect your link popularity and so forth.
