When a search engine is used to find an image, a number of images will be displayed. How and why these images are chosen to feature in the top results that a user is shown when they do enter a search query is of great importance.
SEO Consult can help you learn and understand how search engines work and how you can increase the likelihood that your image and website will appear high in the search results when a relevant query is searched for by a user.
It is common for search engines to determine the order images are displayed in by the text that is associated with the image. This text may be a header or title with the image, or a caption or textual information on the same web page as that image. Not only is the text associated with the image important but the links to and from the web page are also of significance. The better the links, the more likely it is that the web page will be selected and will appear in a top position in search results.
Another variable that can be considered by search engines when choosing the order of results is exactly how often an image is selected and clicked on by a user when the results are presented to them. This of course leads to the suggestion that those images that do feature at the top of the search results list will receive a higher click through rate because of the top position they have.
Search engines are now exploring this idea of predicting how successful results will be in getting searchers to click through to them and how the position they are given within the search results affects this. The search engines would monitor activity to see if their predictions were correct and if those results that they thought would be most popular are actually receiving the most clicks when the relevant search query is entered and their results are displayed.
Yahoo has revealed an application for a new patent based upon this idea. Yahoo suggest that a system which determines multimedia results based upon their predicted click through rate and position within the results, could be important in the further development of search engines and how they provide relevant results. Previous search history and logs of queries searched for and the results that had been provided would be an important part of the prediction process. How search engines decide to use this type of system may vary with some hoping to achieve as many clicks for all of their top results as possible and this determining the order in which they are displayed, and other search engines focusing their attention on getting as many clicks as possible to specific and individual web pages.
The use of a prediction model to determine multimedia search results displayed when a search query is entered is an exciting prospect and is receiving a lot of interest from the search engines. The development of this further will mean a change in the way that some search engines operate and therefore changes in search engine optimisation too.
