Is archiving a reasonable strategy?

You’ve got your site all set up and ready to go. Your SEO company has done a lot of hard work on your pages, but they’ve handed your files back and have given the green light. You’ve got a content plan in place, and everything is ready to roll.

A few months down the track, your pages are exactly where you want them to be and your source of content is still providing excellent material. Things couldn’t be better. Except… your pages are filling up, and even your sub-categories are growing sub-categories. Your old content has to go somewhere, but what will you do with it?

Most search engine optimisation professionals will recommend that you find a way to supply your site with constant fresh content, but virtually no-one will tell you what to do with it when it’s not so fresh. Essentially, you have two options: archive, or throw away. After all the hard work most site owners put into their content, throwing it all away seems like a waste. Archiving content may seem like a more reasonable strategy, but it’s far from easy.

Option 1: the archive option

Deciding to archive your material is just the first step. Once you decide to archive, you need to figure out how this is going to be accomplished, when you’re going to do it, and how users are going to access archived posts. There are a few things you need to take into account, and a few problems you need to keep an eye out for.

Most of the concerns with archiving material are technical. One of the biggest annoyances with archived material, for both site owners and users, is that it often creates broken links. These need to be handled carefully, as archived material can be a great way to bring users back to your main pages. If you’re going to use a tag cloud to allow users to access archived content, you may need to develop a reliable system of tagging, and go back and tag posts. You can talk to our experts at SEO Consult Australia about tagging.

Option 2: strip old content

If you can’t find room to archive your old pages in some form, the only other way to go is to strip back old pages. This isn’t a great option, in SEO terms. Part of the reason the fresh-content strategy has worked so well on sites all over the world is because big sites hold more sway with the search engines. If your site is continually stripping back, it may not have the weight its competitors do.

Another thing to consider is whether throwing away old content is going to have a negative effect on your site as a whole. Old blog posts turn up frequently in searches, and can come in very handy for users researching a particular topic. Your old posts may be supporting your SEO framework, and removing them could bring your ranking down. It’s a good idea to talk to your SEO consultant when considering this issue.
