No matter what kind of business enterprise you’re engaged in, goals will be set and outcomes measured. Whether it’s online marketing, the introduction of a product line, or an email campaign, goals are likely to be involved in the initial planning. Why is it, then, that so few sites set solid goals for their SEO?

Goals are essential for SEO. Note that it’s ‘goals’, plural. Plenty of site owners have the goal to appear higher in the SERPs, but without smaller, more specific goals, you really can’t plan an efficient search engine optimisation campaign.

A lot of site owners aren’t out to make a direct profit, but no matter what kind of site you operate, you need to set goals. Without them, it’s really difficult to know whether your search engine optimisation plan is achieving all you need it to. Whether you want to get more people to subscribe to your newsletter, achieve more revenue through your ad hosting, or simply become the predominant site in your niche, you need to set a number of goals to measure your SEO outcomes.

Why your SEO plan needs goals

The reason to devise a number of specific goals for your SEO is that this will prompt fuller outcomes. Search engine optimization can and should achieve a broad range of things for your site. If you don’t plan for these things, however, it’s unlikely that you’ll get what you want.

For example, the main goal for SEO is better search engine position. When business owners state this, however, they have an underlying desire, namely to make more money from search engine traffic. To achieve this, they want a higher conversion rate. Along with this, they probably want a higher customer return rate, an increase in customer information collected, and a number of other things that support the profit line of a business. All of these are goals that SEO can help with. Without planning, however, they won’t be included in the initial planning for optimisation.

What goals to set

It won’t be hard for most site owners to come up with a list of things they hope to achieve with their site. Relating these goals back to their SEO plans will be a bit more of a leap, but talking to a professional can help. If you’re uncertain what goals to attach to your SEO plan, you can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia.

There are a number of goals that are fairly universal:

  • Increased conversions
  • Increased subscriptions
  • Increased time on site
  • Increased click-through rate
  • Deeper exit pages
  • Increased internet influence

Each of these goals should be set out in numbers, and each should be measured separately. Setting reasonable limits for your goals and measuring them individually not only helps you to stay on track with your achievements, but also helps to identify when aspects of your site need tweaking.

Setting goals for your SEO may seem like a no-brainer, but it really is something that needs a large amount of thought. Think about what you want out of SEO in the bigger picture.
