The new search features provided by Yahoo! are encouraging some of those involved in search engine optimisation to question the popular view that search engines do not appreciate and favour content that is branded.

A new filtering facility is now offered which enables users to choose well-known brand sites that they believe may have relevant content that will be useful for their search query. These websites can then be accessed quickly and easily without the searcher having to explore all of the search results the search engine has suggested. It is of course still possible to enter a search query and have the standard results the search engine has deemed relevant displayed, but there is the possibility to narrow these results down and only visit certain websites if you should choose to do so.

Being able to quickly access websites that you already believe may be helpful is a useful feature as it means that relevant information can be located quickly and gives you the opportunity to visit websites that you would like to explore rather than just the websites the search engine thinks may be appropriate for you.

This feature is also encouraging and helpful for the brands too. In the past, the brand of an item has often lost its importance and influence in the eyes of searchers carrying out research online because the search engines would provide pages that they have found to be relevant and often price would be considered a more important factor by searchers. However, with this development from Yahoo! comes support for brands and the encouraging of users to turn to brands for their needs.

It would seem that Yahoo! has recognised whilst many searchers are happy to look for some products and services online relying on the search engines to provide them with appropriate results, some users will often want to use a branded product or service that they already know about and trust. Yahoo! is monitoring the performance of certain brands and the popularity of these brands. Yahoo! then displays the most suitable and popular brands for users when a search query is carried out. Yahoo! using technology designed to evaluate brands demonstrates to the online community that brands are still an important and influential part of business.

These new features from Yahoo! are interesting and of importance to those that use the search engine to carry out searches and also for those that aim to have their website ranked highly in the results of the search engine. The new filter option added by Yahoo! is encouraging for brands and may encourage other search engines to also incorporate brands into their search options.
