The initial outlay or investment for SEO and PPC differ greatly.  It is estimated that out of a budget of 100% SEO spend comprises around 14% while PPC incurs the balance.   Yet PPC is said to yield a much lower volume of traffic.

The reason for this is the search engines results page or SERP.  When a visitor opens a search engine they are faced with a page that includes the top sponsored sites or PPC sites, the top organic sites or SEO sites and their own alternative sites such as news or shopping sites.

The top 5 organic sites are listed in order of visibility where the site listed first will garner 100% visibility and the site listed fifth will garner 60% visibility.  The search engines ranked sites are situated on the side bar and also follow a visibility ranking.  The site listed first will garner 50% visibility while the site listed fifth will garner 10% visibility.

What the benefits of PPC?

There are many benefits. PPC is said to deliver instant results.  It is said to provide a better ROI and one that can be measured.  Many PPC practitioners come from a marketing background and for them this is an immense benefit.  PPC is also easy to use thanks to software tools and thanks to active support by both Google and Microsoft.  PPC can also be set up fast.

However over a longer period of time SEO should yield better ROI.  Yet to deliver these results it is necessary to invest heavily in SEO in terms of budget, resources and time.

However due to the high costs of PPC, it is said that SEO may in the future gain market share over PPC.  With SEO science becoming easier and easier to understand and to implement many people are turning away from PPC.  However with this simplicity comes the opportunity for black hat SEO.

Which strategy is better?

No strategy is better than the other as each one is subjective.  Their value lies in what best suits a particular individuals needs or goals.  There are however a few factors that can be considered when deciding on whether to implement SEO or PPC.

Firstly a factor that plays a part is what importance is attached to brand promotion as well as the popularity of keywords.  Visibility is another factor especially if one needs to compete for keywords.

It may be suggested that until keyword dominance is gained one would be better off attracting traffic via PPC.  Invest a reasonable amount in optimizing popular keywords that firstly do not have great competition and secondly that aren’t too generic.  Start a blog.  A blog is able to help indexing by a search engine due to two factors.  The first is that blogs require regular updating and second they are able to help keyword optimization.  If a blog is constructed in a way that makes use of SEO tactics such as tags and good content it is able to help rankings and as a result attract traffic.
