It really does not matter what type of business you have chosen to operate and whether it is a niche market or whether your products and service is considered mainstream. What is important is that it is the business you chose and as such you need to establish a strong online visibility for your website. The only way to get that that visibility is through search engine optimisation. You need SEO so that your potential clients can find your website.

General knowledge

Many website owners have made a point of reading up on what optimisation is all about so that they can understand or at least have basic knowledge about what it is all about. Having basic knowledge of the subject and actually implementing a SEO campaign is two very different things. For optimisation to be successful there has to be the ability to use this knowledge to create a campaign where optimisation techniques are being implemented. This means each component of SEO being used throughout each web page. Having all the knowledge in the world, but being unable to implement it will result in failure.

Hands-on expertise

Optimisation is too important a task for most businesses big or small to leave in the hands of amateurs, thus they prefer to outsource it to a SEO firm or consultant. So what must you look for in an optimiser, or do you accept that that in general all optimisers have the same knowledge and skills? You have to look for an optimiser that can demonstrate his hands-on abilities through successful examples of his work. You must be fully confident in his abilities to put his knowledge and skills into practical work for your website. As they say in the movies: he must not only be able to talk the talk, he must be able to walk the walk.

Show and Tell

When you contract an optimiser, you should be informed of everything each step of the way. The optimiser should give you practical examples of ethical optimisation tactics and guide you along the minefield of black hat SEO. Ask questions and make doubly sure the SEO will not do anything that will jeopardise your website with the search engines. You need your SEO to demonstrate to you what good SEO as well as bad SEO looks like and show you how each aspect of your campaign fits together.

Rather safe than sorry

Your website is your showroom to the world where you have to woo your site visitors into becoming your paying customers. Competition is too stiff to make mistakes with your optimisation. You therefore have the right to make completely sure that you choose not only a reputable SEO, but also one that has the in-depth experience that can only be gained through practise. Putting your optimisation into the hands of an unethical or inexperienced or mediocre person can doom your website and your business. Walk away from an optimiser that cannot demonstrate his ability to apply SEO fully and ethically at all times.
