Did you feel an urge to let your eyes travel down from the title of this article? Feel your attention being sucked in as soon as you read the suggestion that reading this would be the key to your search engine optimisation campaign? Okay, you may not have completely fallen for the above title, but it is a good demonstration of something that almost always catches the attention of your target audience. That certain something is a call to action.

The term ‘call to action’ is an old marketing phrase. It’s a technique that is central to converting interest into a sale. The call to action within marketing material directly addresses the reader and instructs them to do something. This is usually encapsulated in a straightforward suggestion, like ‘do this now’. Calls to action have relevance for search engine optimisation as they can help draw your site’s users deeper into your website. They can also be the key in turning search engine traffic into conversions.

What does a CTA have to do with SEO?

Calls to action are something not usually talked about in connection with SEO. You’re more likely to hear the term in connection with regular internet marketing. The main reason for this is that a call to action, sometimes known as a CTA, is a direct push for a conversion. This is something that SEO rarely concerns itself with, preferring a more subtle approach.

Most SEO pros don’t really discuss conversion rates, as the subject is strictly out of the realms of search engine optimisation. What a site does to create sales is more in the realms of internet marketing, but conversions are important for your SEO campaign. If users are bouncing back to the SERPs, or are ignoring your sales messages when they’re on your site, then an adjustment of your SEO strategy might be able to help.

The many versions of a call to action

Calls to action aren’t applicable just to sales sites, although they’re most common on these kinds of sites. Many bloggers use calls to action most effectively, drawing their readers in and engaging them enough to keep them coming back. ‘Continue reading’ is a very common CTA, as is ‘Think about this’. Any direction you give to a reader is, essentially, a call to action. This is why they can help guide your site’s users to do what you want them to do. How to use a call to action

Perhaps the question to ask would be better as ‘where to use a call to action.’ Placement is everything with a call to action. Tell your site users to do something before they have properly engaged with your pages, and you risk turning them away. Ask them after they’ve already decided to take action, and you’ve wasted your energy.

Calls to action should be set out where it’s logical to have them. Although they are an internet marketing technique, it’s important not to be too pushy. Use CTAs to nudge your users in the right direction, not to push.
