Rich media adverts in search results

Varying forms of rich media have been recently appealing to the search engines with more and more taking an interest in the displaying of relevant information in this way. The most commonly used forms of rich media being used are pictures, maps, reviews and video.

Video is becoming more and more popular online with videos being used for all different purposes. The advertising world has also noticed the influence and power these videos are having on online users and so video is becoming an increasingly popular choice for those wanting to promote a product, service or website too. This means the advertisers and the search engines can work together and provide users with information on video.

Yahoo! is currently one of the major search engines involved in this development and has established RAIS which stands for Rich Ads in Search. While it is still only in testing period, it is expected to be something that is implemented in the near future and this could have a significant effect on search engine optimisation techniques.

There are many advantages to using video in search results. RAIS is scheduled to become a cost per click model when finalised and this means that all businesses will have the opportunity to bid on keywords and have their advert and rich media displayed highly on the search results pages.

If an advertiser does choose to use a video to encourage users to click on their link and explore what they have to offer even more then a thumbnail of this video will be shown next to the link. This will be all that is seen of the video until it is selected and clicked on by the search user. When it is clicked, a full shot of the video will be displayed taking up a large section of the area and blocking the other adverts from the view of the user. This means that adverts from competitors will be less likely to appeal to the user. Some users may be worried that by clicking on the video they will lose their search results but they will not be directed away from the search page at this point. The video will be displayed but the search results will remain easily accessible.

RAIS will allow users to create videos of any length. The video that is produced will depend on the preference of the user and what they believe will work best for their business. As advertisers have such control over the content they produce it is important that some thought and research is put into its creation in order to produce a high quality video that is going to encourage users to visit a website.
