It has been revealed that a company named uTest recently commissioned a number of software developers to test the current search engines in order to locate the number of bugs each has. The four search engines that were chosen for evaluation were Google, Bing, Yahoo! and Google Caffeine and numerous software developers were randomly given these search engines to test. This research was carried out over a period of around seven days and has revealed some interesting results, not only about bugs that the search engines have but other surprising information too.
Bing was found to currently have the most number of bugs. However, the developers did note that all the bugs that they found when studying the search engines are actually new and not yet known or recognised by the search engines. This new bug issue will likely be an area of consideration for the search engines now. Google was found to have the fewest number of severe bugs and a low number of bugs overall which was surprising to the many developers that were testing it. As Google is the most popular of the search engines it seemed logical that it would also have the most severe bugs. However, this was not the case and Google came out on top once again but this time for having the fewest number of serious bugs.
Whilst Bing was found to have the most bugs, it was not all negative results that were found by the developers when evaluating this search engine. Software developers were impressed with the relevancy of the search results it provided, a majorly significant factor if a search engine is going to be successful and provide customers with a high level of satisfaction. However, Google once again was rated top of the pile with the best performance in the accuracy of search results it provided, the loading time of its results pages and also the giving of real-time results of relevancy too.
Yahoo! had the fewest number of bugs out of the three main search engines but was not ranked highly for page load speed, relevancy of results and result accuracy which are all major issues for a search engine.
Developers were impressed with Google Caffeine in terms of the speed of service it offers and it was found to have fewer bugs than Yahoo!
When polled after carrying out the research, ninety percent of the software developers that had been testing the search engines stated that Google was their favourite search engine. However, thirty percent of those involved in the study did reveal that they had been pleasantly surprised by the performance and service offered by Bing, with ten percent of them saying they would now make it their default search engine.
The results revealed by this study are interesting and are also reassuring for those involved in search engine optimisation. At SEO Consult we help all of our clients to use the most effective and suitable SEO techniques for their business so they will be ranked highly by Google.
