It wasn’t that long ago that the only means of advertising available from through word of mouth, the printed word, television, radio or newspapers.  Many relied on these methods to get their information across and many relied on them to receive information.

Today most of the world relies on the internet as a means to get and provide information.  Yet having a website is not enough.  A website is only successful if it is easily found.  To do this many practice search engine optimisation.  If successfully done search engine optimisation has the ability to drive traffic to a website.  Yet it takes the help of a search engine to do this.  The search engines job is to find information on a site and if deemed worthy they will index it on their results list.  People help too.  The more traffic is attracted to a site the higher a site will be ranked and the higher up on the results page a website will appear.  This will in turn attract more traffic and with it a higher rate of conversion.

Search engine algorithms and White Hat techniques

Behind all this attracting and ranking and conversion sits an algorithm. An algorithm is basically a set of rules that ‘tell’ a search engine spider what to look for in the content.  A spider does what is has to do without any human intervention checking their work.

All algorithms are programmed or designed to accept White Hat techniques and reject anything that is not.  If a spider runs into something that is not White hat it brings it to the attention of the search engine which imposes penalties accordingly.

Classifying White Hat

As mentioned earlier White Hat SEO uses techniques that have been approved by a search engine.   Their results last longer but they do provide slower results.  According to a search engine White Hat SEO content should be created for a human and not for the search engine, yet it must be available so that spiders can do the necessary.

Content should be fresh, interesting and original.  It should contain the right amount of keywords per page and should not contain any cloaking mechanisms.   White Hat SEO is used by those who want their websites to be found, for a long time.  Those who practice White Hat SEO are those who take full advantage of the many methods at their fingertips. Such as RSS Feeds.

RSS Feeds offer an advantage in that the content contained in the web log can be seen.  Without having to visit the homepage.  It uses an XML file format that works especially well for new website.  Other advantages can be gained and which constitute White Hat SEO come from providing an area for feedbacks, creating a site map or creating a business blog on a website.

Slow, but steady

With White Hat SEO you will get higher rankings, they may be slow at the beginning but they will be steady.  By creating good articles and providing high quality links you can start generating the right traffic.
