Search without keywords?

The idea of a search system that is operated without the use of keywords has been receiving a lot of attention recently. Even Nick Fox from Google Adwords has been exploring this idea and sharing it with others during some of his recent presentations. This seems to be an idea that is really appealing to Google and the other search engines too and so it is already time for those involved in search engine optimisation to consider this possibility further.

There are many different reasons as to why the idea of search without keyword terms is appealing to the search engines. More and more of the search queries that have been placed recently have been unique and new and the length of these queries has also been found to have been increasing in recent months. Often, a search query now contains more than five words. The way that searchers search for something has also been changing recently and has been becoming more sophisticated. Users are finding more different ways to search for something. They are using different words and phrases and this can make it more difficult for a search system that is based on keywords to operate effectively.

Google is keen to find a new way for advertisers and searchers to connect and this new system is currently being viewed as a possible replacement. The current system uses keywords provided by the advertiser to indicate relevance. However, it is currently being argued that it is not actually necessary for the advertiser to have to create and monitor a list of keywords in order for this to work. Google suggests that advertisers could provide search engines such as Google with any relevant information about the products and services offered and then Google could use the details that it has been given to determine the most effective way for the adverts to be found and displayed to the target audience of customers.

Search being carried out like this could have many advantages for both searchers and advertisers too. Without the use of keywords advertisers could expect more efficient results with more relevant searchers being directed to their advert and possibly their website. It would also be easier for searchers and advertisers to connect using simple and natural language, which is important because more searchers are now searching the internet in this way. It is hoped that searchers would be provided with more relevant and useful search results and that the advertiser will receive more genuine and relevant traffic from using a system that is not based on searching with keywords.

Google is still working on and developing this idea and suggests that it will be a while before it can offer this kind of system. However, it has stated reasons why it believes a development like this is necessary and has already shared some ideas with users to gain some valuable feedback on how searchers and advertisers view this possibility.
