Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Specialists

SEO is not a web design freebie

Part of the problem, when it comes to search engine optimisation, is the general air of confusion about the subject outside the industry. Experts who are embedded in the industry assume that everyone knows about how SEO works. If you go outside the rarefied air of the SEO community, however, the reaction you get to the mention of optimisation is ‘huh?’

The general public simply does not know about search engine optimisation. They don’t even recognise the term as anything more than a random set of words. The chances are that if you’re a business that’s new to optimisation, you’ll only know a little bit more… and you know what they say: a little information can be more dangerous than none at all.

This small amount of information has sunk hundreds of websites in their first forays into search engine optimisation, simply because they don’t know what they’re looking for. When you’re uncertain, you can talk to our consultants at SEO Consult Australia. Unfortunately, there are too many ‘optimisation experts’ out there for a newcomer to really judge who’s who. Although SEO is a specialist industry, anyone can set themselves up as an optimisation services provider. What’s worse, anyone in related industries who has some knowledge of SEO can do so.

Web designers, marketers and IT specialists have got into the habit of dabbling in SEO, and this has caused countless problems for unsuspecting site owners. When someone with only slight knowledge of optimisation adds touches to a website, they can do more harm than good. Every SEO company has had clients with horror stories about web designers who have used outdated optimisation techniques and landed them in Google’s sandbox.

The situation happens like this. A business owner goes to a web designer, marketing firm or even a print design company and accesses their main services. In the course of the transaction, the web designer or marketer mentions that they have experience with search engine optimisation, and were wondering if the business owner has optimised their site. The business owner, surprised, says no, and the designer or marketer offers to do a little dabbling. Before you know it, the site is in an even worse position than before, and the business owner has no idea what to do to right the situation.

The worst thing of all is that these things are usually done in a spirit of generosity. Companies often add some SEO touches as a way of pleasing their customers, a sort of free extra. The trouble is, when these free extras are not carried out by someone with professional experience of optimisation, things can go wrong.

This is not to say that only self-proclaimed SEO experts can perform successful optimisation. SEO isn’t something requiring a qualification, and many people have successfully learned how to optimise their own sites. The important thing to remember is to fully check the capabilities of anyone offering optimisation before you let them touch your site. Although it may be a kind gesture, it can also turn into a disaster.
