The journey of search engine optimisation may seem to begin when you find the right SEO consultant. For a more effective campaign, though, your SEO journey should really begin long before that. Your journey should start with your own company’s plans, which will lead to the more complex foundations of your overall SEO plan.

Your search engine optimization company will be able to assist you greatly in planning your site’s optimisation, and you can talk to our team at SEO Consult Australia. It is a good idea, though, to think through the following factors before talking to your consultant:

1. Your online campaign. This is a good place to begin because your website is undoubtedly the hub of your online campaign. A lot of businesses forget this, letting their SEO be treated as a separate issue from search marketing or other online tactics.

Your online campaign needs to be the beginning of your SEO planning in the same way that a mustering up of troops is the beginning of a battle. Looking at the elements of your overall online campaign will allow you to assess what assets you have to use in SEO, and also to think about how your SEO plan will help you in areas beyond the search engines.

2. Site strength. It is impossible to move forward with website optimisation until you know your existing strengths and weaknesses. This is something that is generally done in the initial site analysis performed by an optimisation company, but it can be helpful for you to know where you stand for yourself. Some very basic analysis is easy to perform. Simply look at:

  • Existing SERPs positions
  • Existing PageRank
  • Current link profile
  • Current content

These are your main assets going in to SEO. Once you’ve looked at these, look at the sites of your competitors to get an idea of where you should be headed. Your search engine optimisation consultant may make a different assessment of your assets during initial analysis, but looking at these areas can give you a rough idea of the work to be done.

3. Industry competition. One of the earliest choices you will have to make is the level of competition you want to enter with your SEO. Although you may feel you have a solid grasp of competition in your industry, competition within the search engines is an entirely different ball game.

It can help to look at the main keywords for your industry, and to see where your site currently stands in comparison to others. If you’re way behind, you may want to think about less competitive keywords. Look at the keywords you already appear for as a starting point. Your search engine optimization consultant will be able to give you a better idea of your ability to compete later.

Combining these three areas will give you an idea of where you currently stand, what you will have to do, and what you want to achieve with SEO. This puts you in a better position when first talking to your optimisation company.
