Social bookmarking is not a new concept. It has been around since almost the dawn of the internet. The concept has always had a core of dedicated followers, and plenty of sites have always benefited from it. With the rise in popularity of all things social on the net, however, social bookmarking is getting bigger and should be considered as part of a site’s search engine optimization plan.

The benefits of social bookmarking for SEO are plentiful. There’s the basic benefit of extra coverage for your site. In promoting your pages through social bookmarking, you’re ensuring that a larger number of people will become aware of your business. There’s also the links factor. While not all social bookmarking sites give link juice when articles are bookmarked, a lot of them do. Good content can also attract links by itself this way.

Some of the players

There are oodles of social bookmarking sites and communities out there, and it can be difficult to know which of them would be best for your site. It’s difficult enough getting a handle on exactly who the main players are.

Knowing who’s who in social bookmarking sites can be a bit tricky due to the fact that they rise and fall in popularity so swiftly. Looking at the system from the outside, it seems chaotic. It’s hard to dip your toes into.

Some of the more popular social bookmarking sites are Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon and Delicious. Twitter is getting more popular as a form of social bookmarking as well. Choosing to participate on the most popular sites would seem like a good idea, except that some social bookmarking sites are for specialized subjects. The players also change constantly. It’s far better to do some research before diving in.

Be selective when participating

Picking a social bookmarking system to use can be difficult. Even if you decide to feature multiple social bookmarking buttons, you can’t possibly feature them all. Although there are many site owners out there who submit to as many social bookmarking sites as they can find, even using automated software to do so, their attempts to participate in as many as possible come off looking a little desperate.

One of the easiest ways to pick is to see which one you would be interested in personally. If you’re personally invested in your site’s subject area then it’s likely that a lot of your site’s users, and a number of other people in your industry, would make the same decision. Otherwise, it’s a good idea to research your target user groups to find out what sites they are more likely to use, and target those sites. Is social bookmarking for you?
Social bookmarking, like all social media, requires a fair amount of work to be of benefit to your SEO plan. The community feeling of social bookmarking circles can be extremely helpful when you’re trying to build up a network of support, but the time investment required is significant. Consider it carefully.
