There is often a lot of confusion amongst webmasters as to why Google penalties are applied to certain websites and the punishments that are issued. Receiving a Google penalty for any reason and no matter what the penalty may be, can be an extremely distressing occurrence and is something that can make a big difference to the future success of a business. Therefore, it is of great importance that if a penalty has been issued by Google that the business is aware of it so that it can work to rectify the situation and have the penalty removed. There are a few simple things to look out for that may signify that your website is being penalised.

When trying to identify if your website has a penalty or not it can be beneficial to visit the Google Webmaster Tools web page as sometimes it will inform you if there is a penalty on your website and the reason why it has been applied. This will not always be the case but it can save a lot of time and researching if you are openly told about the issues Google has with your website.

A drop in rankings and the amount of traffic to your website for a period of time is one of the most obvious signs of a penalty having been applied to your website. If Google believes that your website is not adhering to its rules and regulations, your site will not be ranked highly and this of course means less traffic. Often, rankings can go up and down quite regularly so look for a drop that lasts a week or two before becoming too concerned about a penalty.

If your website has been established a while and has regularly been found to be ranked in the top spot of the search results when the domain name is searched for then if your website is no longer ranked at the top this could be a sign of a penalty.

Another simple test that you can carry out online is by entering ‘site:yourdomain.com’ into the Google search box and exploring the results provided. If this search doesn’t provide any results, then your website has a penalty.

A Google penalty can be disastrous for a business and can harm the amount of traffic to the website and reputation online. If you have a penalty finding it and having it removed as soon as possible is of utmost importance if you want your business to get back on track and want your search engine optimisation campaign to be successful.
