Social networking websites are increasing in popularity with millions of internet users having profiles on websites such as Twitter and Facebook and regularly updating them with posts of information. Social networking websites provide users with a great opportunity to communicate with others on a personal level, but also enable businesses and consumers to interact. Many businesses now have profiles on the main social networking websites and if these profiles are managed correctly, this can be an effective way to develop a brand online and increase the amount of traffic that visits a site.

It may be the common view that businesses trying to gain exposure and attention for their brand using social networking websites have to use manipulation in order to do this successfully and will likely be viewed as somewhat of a nuisance by other social network users, but recent research has revealed that this is often not actually the case at all. In fact, information gathered is suggesting that many social network users want to be involved with brands within their online social communities.

In a recent study, it was found that if a user becomes a ‘friend’ of a brand on a social networking website such as MySpace or Facebook then this can significantly affect their behaviour and the chances of them becoming a customer of this business. 39% stated that having a brand as a friend on a social networking website usually increases their awareness about the brand and what it is able to offer and 41% of those involved in the research even said that they would usually consider a brand like this when looking for an item or service they are able to provide. 43% of users usually buy a product from a brand they have as a ‘friend’ on a social networking website and 39% would then also recommend a brand like this to others within the social networking community. These are significant results that illustrate just how much having a successful profile on a social networking website can influence the purchasing behaviour of others that you communicate with.

Similarly impressive results were also found from users of Twitter. Those that follow a brand online using Twitter are likely to be aware of what the brand can offer, are likely to consider this brand when looking to purchase something they can supply, are likely to buy from this brand and are also likely to recommend this brand.

As this research indicates, businesses that have a profile on social networking websites can effectively make themselves memorable and appealing to other social networking users. Many social networking users like to associate with brands online and research suggests this may be because they are hoping for access to exclusive deals and information. It is likely that this will develop further in the future with special deals offered to social networking users.
